NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? A Nashville judge has appointed a lawyer to investigate what's going on with actress Reese Witherspoon's father who is accused of bigamy and possibly has dementia, according to documents released in a sealed court case.

Earlier this month, Witherspoon's mother, Betty Witherspoon, said her husband of 42 years married another woman even though he remained wed to her.

A hearing in that case, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been indefinitely postponed. In the meantime, documents released from another Nashville court indicate that John Witherspoon was placed in a conservatorship at the request of the Academy Award-winning actress and her brother.

The actress appeared in a Nashville courtroom on May 11 with her father, a Nashville otolaryngologist, but a judge barred the media from covering the hearing.

The parents have been separated since 1996 but remain married and still attend family functions together, including their daughter's March 2011 wedding.

Betty Witherspoon said in court documents that she discovered that her husband married the other woman after reading a newspaper wedding announcement. She signed an affidavit saying that when she confronted her 70-year-old husband, he didn't know who the woman was or remember marrying her.

Betty Witherspoon has accused John Witherspoon's new wife, Tricianne "Patricia" Taylor, of taking out loans as Mrs. John Witherspoon and changing his will.

"She vehemently denies those allegations," said Joe Brandon Jr., an attorney who represents Taylor. "She's devastated, and we don't have any further comment."

Betty Witherspoon, a 63-year-old nurse at Vanderbilt University hospital and a retired Tennessee State professor, says in the court documents that she still loves her husband and fears for his safety. She has accused him of taking out large loans for money.

"My husband's spending practices have accelerated," her affidavit says. "I now understand that he may have borrowed $400,000 at Bank of America and either forged my name or had his girlfriend posing as his wife sign."

The documents say she no longer lives with her husband because of his "alcoholism, infidelity, overspending and hoarding."

Betty Witherspoon has asked a family court judge to annul the wedding between her husband and Taylor and to order her to leave all residences belonging to the family, return all possession she has acquired and pay all court costs.

The Tennessean newspaper and WSMV-TV have filed an emergency petition with the probate court asking that the judge to unseal the documents and open all future court hearings to the media.

The limited documents released in the probate case mostly involved filings from the media.

A hearing has been scheduled on June 25 that will decide whether the judge will unseal the files and open any future court hearings.

(Reuters) - Thousands of authors can sue Google Inc in a class-action lawsuit over its plan to create the world's largest digital book library, a federal judge ruled on Thursday.

U.S. Circuit Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan also rejected Google's bid to dismiss claims by The Authors Guild and several groups representing photographers and graphic artists, which would have forced their members to sue individually.

Plaintiffs in the seven-year-old case have complained that Google's plan for the library, which would include millions of out-of-print works, amounted to "massive copyright infringement."

The case arose from Google's 2004 agreement with several big research libraries to digitally copy books and other writings for its Google Books website, with a goal of helping researchers and the general public locate the materials.

Google has since scanned more than 12 million books, but planned to provide only snippets online, saying this activity constituted "fair use" under U.S. copyright law.

Chin said it would be more efficient for authors to sue as a group, rather than risk disparate results and the "exponentially" higher costs of individual lawsuits.

He also said it would be unjust to force members of The Authors Guild, the American Society of Media Photographers and other groups to sue individually "given the sweeping and undiscriminating nature of Google's unauthorized copying."

The litigation combines lawsuits against Mountain View, California-based Google in 2005 on behalf of authors, and in 2010 on behalf of photographers and graphic artists.

A Google spokeswoman said in an emailed statement: "As we've said all along, we are confident that Google Books is fully compliant with copyright law."

Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In March 2011, Chin cited antitrust and copyright concerns in rejecting a proposed comprehensive $125 million settlement, saying it went "too far" in letting Google effectively conduct "wholesale copying of copyrighted works without permission."

Chin was elevated in 2010 to the federal appeals court in New York, but kept jurisdiction over the Google case, which he had begun overseeing as a trial judge.

The cases are The Authors Guild et al v. Google Inc, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 05-08136; and American Society of Media Photographers et al v. Google Inc in the same court, No. 10-02977.

It is the paradox of medical billing: Medical insurance means you might actually have to pay more in some cases.

Take the story of one frustrated patient in Southern California who needed a CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis after colon surgery. Her visit for the scan at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center cost $6,707 total. With her Blue Shield of California insurance, her out-of-pocket cost was $2,336.

But what if she had not used her insurance and paid straight cash instead? Then her cost would have been halved -- only costing $1,054 according to a story in Los Angeles Times.

?I was really upset that I got charged so much and Blue Shield allowed that. You expect them to work harder for you and negotiate a better deal,? Long Beach patient, Jo Ann Snyder, 57, said in the LAT.

Her story reveals the murky underworld of medical billing: There is the price that hospitals and doctors charge insurance companies and the price they charge if patients pay in cash. The lack of price transparency is just another piece of the ever-more complicated landscape of medical billing.

Budget gaps at hospitals have forced many institutions to raise prices, even as new government rules have placed some limits on what they can charge the patients without insurance, according to the LAT. Ultimately the cost to underwrite the uninsured is passed on to insurance companies and insured patients -- who can end up paying up to 10 times as much as cash-pay patients do for the same procedure.

Many hospitals and physicians offer big discounts for cash-paying patients regardless of income or insurance coverage -- but that fact is largely obscured from patients. "The last thing the insurance companies want you to know is how inexpensive this stuff really is, David Belk, an internist in Alameda, Calif. and creator of the True Cost of Healthcare website to educate the public about medical cost markups, told the LAT.

And as these higher costs being passed on to patients, billing services and companies are getting more aggressive about collections, going as far as badgering patients in the emergency room for payment.

And it's not just price transparency at the hospital. It's with doctors as well. A New York couple, who was profiled in the New York Times, is trying to unspool a billing and debt collection nightmare after getting his and hers colonscopies with two different in-network doctors. Getting really sweaty is not normally a good thing. But imagine if doing so could make the film you're watching more exciting - or even change what happens next. Technology firm Sensum is launching a smartphone app that will use your sweat to make life far more entertaining.

Sensum pairs a wrist-mounted galvanic skin response (GSR) sensor, made by Dublin company Shimmer Research, via Bluetooth to a smartphone with the Sensum app installed. The sensor measures how much you sweat while watching different videos, and sends the data to the smartphone which then uploads the data to the Sensum website. Then you can play back the video overlaid with a graph that shows just what made you jump.

You are also given a score for how much you engaged with what you saw, which you can compare to others'. That gamification aspect is addictive. "You're getting rewarded for taking part," says Sensum's Gawain Morrison. It works - I found myself wanting to be sweatier for the first time ever, just so that I could feel more emotionally sensitive.

But the data isn't just collected and gamified, it can be used to change what you're watching in real time too. Last year Morrison's Belfast-based production company Filmtrip launched their interactive short horror film Unsound at SXSW, which responded to the audience's excitement - measured by their GSR and heart rate - by making the footage even gorier and the music more tense. "The physiology of the user shapes their entertainment experience," says Morrison.

Now that the technology has become mobile it can be rolled out on a much broader scale. "The mobile version allows us so much more room," says Morrison. "You can do proper deep-level immersion stuff and physiology encryption. If you go to a film with one of these devices on you're going to come out of that with data unique to you. For an alternate reality game tied into a film you then have totally personal physiological encryption."

Morrison foresees the platform being used to unlock content - be it games, comic books or extra plot - that is personally tailored for each viewer. "You're getting a personal reward for engaging with the film," he says. "All the further content is led by how you engaged with it."

Bringing it back to its origins, though, Filmtrip is working with science-fiction novelist Ian McDonald on the script of a feature-length film with multiple endings where physiological markers from the audience will change the film's music, special effects, character paths and even the ending.

The Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) is a series of annual bilateral military exercises. A CARAT exercise between the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and Royal Thai Navy and Marine Corps began May 17 with opening ceremonies in Sattahip. CARAT consists of a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Any military writer worth his or her salt would do well to be covering these exercises as they take place in Thailand. During the training, Sailors and Marines from the United States and Thailand train on maritime interception Operations, riverine, amphibious and undersea warfare operations, diving and salvage operations, naval gunnery and maneuvering events, along with disaster response exercises.

The launch of the decade-long-awaited "Diablo 3" has been bedeviled by a variety of issues, but the people behind the action role-playing game?say they have been busy fixing it?and will continue to make more fixes in the coming weeks.

With gamers complaining of being unable to access overloaded servers, of?achievements gone missing and of?gold stolen from hacked accounts, Blizzard has posted a lengthy message to players on its Battle.net forums?explaining that?it has been "working around the clock to address issues as quickly and efficiently as possible."?

Since the game's launch, we?ve applied a number of hotfixes?to address gameplay issues, made tweaks to improve our service stability and performed occasional server maintenance when necessary to ensure that in the long term, players have the best gameplay experience possible.

The message goes on to say that more server maintenance is still required and that Blizzard will be updating the game with a patch?"sometime next week" to address additional issues and bugs.

While Blizzard says it is still trying to figure out how to address the issue of achievements that went missing as gamers played?during the first days after launch, it doesn't sound like there's much to be done about the hacked accounts.

Despite some players speculating otherwise,?Blizzard insists that its servers have not been compromised and says that the number of players reporting hacked accounts is "extremely small." The company goes on to explain:

?In all of the individual Diablo III-related compromise cases we've investigated, none have occurred after a physical Battle.net Authenticator or Battle.net Mobile Authenticator app was attached to the player's account, and we have yet to find any situation where a Diablo III player's account was accessed outside of "traditional" compromise methods (i.e. someone logging using an account's login email and password) ...?

The best defense against account theft still includes smart password management (e.g. using a unique password for every site/service and keeping your password to yourself) and scanning for malware and viruses regularly, as well as following additional preventative steps found here.?

And in a final bit of news, Blizzard said that it has pushed back the launch of its?real-money auction house?(a place gamers will be able to use real money to to buy and sell virtual "Diablo 3" items) indefinitely.?

All of the troubles aside, "Diablo 3" is still?selling at a record-breaking pace. And the game continues to rake in high marks from reviewers. Here's what our own In-Game editor Todd Kenreck thought about it:

AeroVironment will support the DACA program by conducting demonstrations using its family of portable, hand-launched small UAS for airborne communication relay. Transportable in a backpack or vehicle and operated using a hand-held control unit, AeroVironment?s small UAS can be assembled and launched in less than five minutes and can fly for between 45 minutes and two hours, depending on the model.

The demonstrations will utilize AeroVironment?s Digital Data Link (DDL), a standard component of its small UAS, as well as third party communications payloads to connect users with data and voice over long distances. The DDL enables encrypted, beyond-line-of-sight voice, video, data and text communication through each unmanned air vehicle and ground station, and will provide broadband network connectivity for the DACA demonstration. The Midas List?Forbes? annual list of the top 100 venture capitalists?is not without its critics. Last year,?I was one of them. After the?2011 List?was chided for including only two women, List editor Nicole Periroth wrote in a?response?that women just weren?t pursuing a venture capital (VC) career path: ?I hope the dearth of women on this year?s list is a sober wake-up call?for everyone.?

But as I?ve written before in this column, women are sometimes held back by a lack of role models. In other words,?you can?t be what you can?t see.

Five extraordinary women were honored on this year?s Midas List. Although five in 100 falls short of industry expectations (female partners made up 8.5% of Midas List-eligible venture capital firms last year), lamenting the shortage of women in VC does nothing to solve the pipeline problem.

To make change in any field, we need smart, brave, and determined front-runners to break down barriers and lead the way. The five women on the Midas List represent just that?a slate of role models for the coming generation of investors.

Mary Meeker: #42

Although Barron?s named her ?Queen of the Net? back in 1998, Meeker debuted on the Midas List in 2012, buoyed by her success with the $12.8 billion Groupon IPO. With an MBA from Cornell University and a BA in psychology, she spent 28 years on Wall Street before shifting to Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in late 2010.

Born in China?s Fujian Province, Lu focuses her investments largely in East Asia. Her big win was the $1.24 billion IPO of e-commerce giant Dangdang (?the Amazon.com of China?), but Lu?s portfolio at DCM includes businesses in diverse fields like healthcare, events, and communications. Her background is in investment banking and consulting, and she has a master?s degree in international studies.

Theresia Gouw Ranzetta: #92

Ranzetta earned her way back onto the Midas List (up one spot from #93) for her success with security company Imperva?s nearly $400 million IPO. Her investments at Accel Partners also include female-focused consumer companies like Glam Media, ModCloth, and LearnVest. Although she spent a few years in consulting and tech, most of her career has been in venture capital. Ranzetta did her undergraduate work in engineering and then earned an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Based in Shanghai, Lee focuses on the Chinese market for GGV Capital. She started her career in electronic warfare technology, and has been in the VC industry for a decade where she made her way onto the Midas List for her role in the success of Chinese companies HiSoft and 21Vianet. Lee earned bachelor?s and master?s degrees in engineering, and she holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Adele Oliva: #97

One of the very few life sciences investors on the 2012 Midas List, Oliva made a name for herself with the $525 million acquisition of Ascent Healthcare Solutions. Prior to starting her career in investing in 1997, Oliva worked in marketing and business development in the healthcare sector. She has a bachelor?s in finance and earned an MBA from Cornell University.

Playing With the Boys

Featured on the Midas List with 95 of their industry?s top male investors, the female honorees are used to being part of the boys club. ?I?m accustomed to the environment,? said Oliva of her role in a male-dominated industry. Another honoree bristled at being called a female VC. ?I?m a VC, period,? she explained.

When I asked Lee what it?s like to be a female venture capitalist, she laughed. ?We have to work harder to establish our networks. There?s no ?old girls? club.? We have to compete [with the men].?

Carl J. Schramm, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation, thinks VC looks a lot like the legal profession back in the 1980s. ?The venture capital industry is among the last bastions of male dominance in the business world,? he explained.

?

What Women Bring to VC

But why is it so important to have more women in venture capital? The women who are there offer good perspective.

?I?m a techie,? explained Lee. ?I can analyze business plans logically. But venture capital is not all quantitative. There?s a qualitative element?a sixth sense?that women bring to VC. From reading management teams to doing due diligence, observing interactions is an important part of this job.?

In addition to bringing a different perspective, Oliva shared another reason why she believes there is a huge benefit to diversity in teams: ?Women bring a different network.? Ranzetta agrees: ?As the range of experiences that an investor brings to the table gets wider, it increases the aperture for entrepreneurs they have access to.?

The Growth of Entrepreneurship Among Women

A network of women in the venture investing community can have an important impact on the rising number of female entrepreneurs looking for funding and mentorship. Trish Costello, CEO of the Center for Venture Education, sees something unique in the women who are emerging in the venture capital field: ?[They] see their access to women-led deals as offering comparative advantage.?

When she saw an increase in the number of female entrepreneurs in China, Lee wanted to do something to build a community. She helped create an informal group for aspiring women entrepreneurs, allowing them to connect with each other and with female investors. ?Mentorship is important to me. I?m very happy to sit down and talk to people.?

Oliva also has fondness for women who start businesses. ?Using pattern recognition over the years, I have found that if a woman has reached a certain level of achievement, there?s a high likelihood that she?s exceptional. There are just so many screens along the way.?

Ranzetta couldn?t be more excited about the increase in women entrepreneurs and executives. ?The entrepreneurial leaders of today are the pipeline for tomorrow?s investors,? she says. ?In five to 10 years, I think we?ll see a lot more women in VC.?

With?scores of women?chomping at the bit to show the world of venture investing that they mean business, it is an exciting time for women in VC. But more importantly, it?s an exciting time for the VC industry as a whole. When it comes to the importance of women and minorities having a place at the investing table, Ranzetta put it best: ?A diversity of viewpoints increases the chances that you?ll make an off-the-beaten path investment. Not all of those investments work out, but some do. And when they do?that?s the key to success in this industry.?

Ever since he arrived here last August, Mr. Locke?s image as a ?regular guy? has won widespread admiration from Chinese bloggers and, it seems, irked the authorities.

The way he tried to get a discount at Starbucks with a coupon en route to Beijing, and carried his own backpack, is the polar opposite of the way aloof and pampered Chinese officials behave. So when Chinese citizens praise him, by implication they are criticizing their own leaders.

Lashing out at the US ambassador earlier this month for his role in protecting blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, the Beijing Daily published a strongly worded criticism of his ?little tricks.?

But readers? reactions to the editorial were so negative that within hours ?Beijing Daily? was a banned search word on the Chinese Internet, effectively closing down social media debate on the article.

That setback does not appear to have chastened Beijing Daily, however, and today the paper put its foot in it again.

Editors used the daily?s account on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, to post a snide request, responding to another post about Locke?s wealth.

?Will Gary Locke please disclose his personal assets?? it asked.

The question was, perhaps, conceived as a sideways commentary on the lively debate currently underway in China about the need for top officials here ? often accused of corruption ? to disclose their wealth.

But of course, the editors simply revealed their ignorance. As scornful readers quickly informed them, Locke HAS disclosed his personal assets, just like every other member of the US government. (According to his 2010 declaration, he is worth between $1,356,025 and $7,615,999, which makes him the sixth richest person in the executive branch.)

?Of course Gary Locke?s personal assets have been disclosed,? read one comment on the Beijing Daily post. ?And what about the assets of those imperial officials [of ours]?

Within hours, Beijing Daily?s original post and all comments on it had been deleted from Sina Weibo, according to David Bandurski of Hong Kong University?s China Media Project, who tracked the incident in real time.

On Sunday, May 20, the western half of the United States will be treated to a spectacular annular eclipse as the sun sets in the western sky.

This 4 1/2-minute-long "ring of fire" as the moon blocks the sun will be visible to observers along a narrow track that stretches from Northern California to the Texas Panhandle.

The last time an?annular eclipse?was widely visible in the United States was May 10, 1994. After Sunday, the next one to be seen in the country won't occur until Oct. 14, 2023.

If you're planning to shoot?this weekend's eclipse?with a digital camera, particularly a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, here are a few pointers to increase your chances of success:?

1. Use a proper solar filter:?Never look at the sun?with your naked eyes, or through a telescope, binocular or camera viewfinder without a safe solar filter. Failure to do so can result in serious eye injury or blindness. [How to Safely Photograph the Sun (Photo Guide)]

Use a No. 14 welder's glass filter, or purchase special solar filters from companies such as Thousand Oaks, Kendrick Astro Instruments, or Orion Telescopes & Binoculars, and fit them securely?in front?of your equipment.

2. Use a telescope or telephoto lens with a focal length of 400 millimeters or more: ?This helps to get detailed, close-up shots of the eclipse. This will give you a reasonably large image of the sun's disk in the frame.

3.?Use a sturdy tripod or mount:?Make sure your tripod and head are strong and stable enough to support your camera gear. Keep your setup as portable, light and easy to assemble as possible in case you need to relocate in a hurry to escape clouds.

4. Set the camera to its highest resolution:?To record as much detail and color information as possible, use your camera's highest-quality (least-compressed) JPEG setting or "lossless" (uncompressed) image formats, such as TIFF or RAW.

5. Use a high ISO setting:?Set your camera to ISO 400 (or higher) to keep exposures very short and prevent blurring from vibrations.

6. Switch to manual:?Set your camera to "manual" (M) so you'll be able to control its focus as well as exposure and white-balance settings.

7. Focus carefully:?Don't let poor focus ruin your images. If possible, prefocus your camera the night before the eclipse using a bright star. Otherwise, focus carefully on the sun's edge (or on sunspots, if some are visible).
