Is your Financial House in Order? |

Executive women have a lot on their plates. In addition to demanding careers, many women are juggling raising children, having a relationship, and trying to provide some semblance of balance in their lives. The challenge for these women is that they focus on taking care of everyone but themselves. Their financial life winds up pretty far down the list of priorities. Case in point: Yesterday I had lunch with two girlfriends, both of whom run successful companies here in Southern California. Coincidentally, both of these women are going through a major life changing event: Divorce. These are emotional times and both women have found themselves in the position of having to deal with financial issues that they did not address prior, because they never expected they?d need to. Having your financial house in order before a major life transition can help you avoid certain financial pain, heartbreak, and drama that happens in these situations. More importantly, it prepares you for life?s unexpected events and helps you push forward instead of finding yourself at an impasse.

To have security in life financially means not only making money and investing it well for your goals, but also protecting your family financially and passing your wealth on as you intended? It means having a plan. I believe that in order to be truly financially secure, you need to look at your entire life. This is a disciplined, holistic approach to wealth management. I?d like to propose that we women stand back for a few minutes to assess our personal lives and then follow some guidelines to help us achieve financial well-being for ourselves and our families.

Let?s talk about the issues you should address, one by one.. I break them down into two main categories: Investment Management and Estate Planning, and there are several sub-topics within these categories. Not all of these issues affect everyone and they may not all affect you. However, if you go through each topic, identify those that affect you and prioritize them, you can then put a plan together.

Investment Management

1. Investments: I?m sure you?re familiar with the saying, ?It?s not how much you make, it?s how much you keep.? Investing your money is not only about preserving what you?ve made and kept, but making it grow. Your investments should be invested in a way that is based on your personal risk tolerance, when you need the money, and the specific goal(s) that guided your investment choices. In addition, ALL investments should be considered when you come up with your plan on how best to invest your money. So, Real Estate, stocks, bonds, limited partnerships, you name it ? It all figures together when determining a strategy to get you to where you want to be financially. If you have several different accounts, make sure they are all considered when you take a look at your assets to determine how best to invest them. Bottom line: take stock of everything you have, everything you need, and everything you want. This is why you invest and how you?ll make sure your investment strategy reflects your life goals today, tomorrow, and after.

2. Qualified Retirement Plan/IRA Coordination: Even though your employer-sponsored retirement plans must remain, most of the time, in the plan your employer provides, you may have a degree of control over how that money is invested within the plan. You?ll want to make sure your money is invested based on your personal risk tolerance and goals, and diversified among the choices provided. You will also want to be sure that the strategy you employ here is in sync with your overall investment strategy. Make sure to keep beneficiaries up to date. If you have life changing events, be sure to review who you have chosen for your beneficiaries.

3. Stock Options: If you are compensated by stock options, you?ll want to make sure there is plan to help you unwind concentrated stock positions. There may be significant tax implications here to consider.

4. Managing Liabilities: Any debt you have needs to be considered in the big picture of your financial life. Identify all your debt, such as: mortgages, car loans, construction loans, education funding, business loans and credit cards. You will want to address the interest rates of any debt you have as part of your investment strategy.

5. Business Succession Planning: This is a big one that is often overlooked by small business owners. For many business owners, the business is their retirement plan, as well as their largest asset. Depending upon your wishes for your business, you should have a plan in place to transfer ownership of the company down the road when you are ready to retire. If there are several owners of the company, you should have a plan in place to anticipate the issues that might arise should one or several of the owners change.

Estate Planning

1. Insurance: This is all about asset protection. If you have children or a non-working spouse, you truly must have life insurance. I usually suggest term life insurance to my clients who are looking to make sure their families are protected should they pass away. Term life insurance tends to be relatively inexpensive. As you approach age 50, I suggest you consider Long Term Care insurance. The premiums will be lower for you if you get a policy when you?re younger, rather than waiting until you think you need the service. Not only that, but you are more likely to be healthy when you?re young, which is an important qualifier for most insurance companies when evaluating potential insureds.

2. Durable Power of Attorney: It became apparent to me how important this and an Advanced Directive was when my husband had a heart attack last year. If you become incapacitated, you will need someone to make decisions that are in line with what you would want.

3. Asset Titling: You want to make sure that all your assets are titled correctly so that they wind up going to whom you intended. I recently heard a very sad story about a widow whose late husband had not updated the title on some key family assets. When he passed away suddenly, there ensued a battle between his family and his widow. I am sure most of us would rather have our assets go directly to those we intend.

4. Trust Executor: Make sure you have someone whom you trust to execute your estate plan when the time comes. This may be a relative or a professional fiduciary, but you?ll want to have the person designated ahead of time. Through your estate planning attorney, it is very easy to conduct a video recording of yourself executing your estate plan. This simple and inexpensive service takes a lot of pressure off your Executor and is an instrument that aids in preserving your wishes.

5. Distribution of Wealth: Not only do you want to make sure that your wealth is distributed according to your wishes, but there will also be tax implications that you will want to have anticipated and planned for. Establishing a trust is key to avoiding probate and passing on your money as you had wished.

6. Gifting to Children and Descendants: There are many different ways for you to assist your children and grandchildren financially. If this is important to you, you?ll want to make sure someone can help you structure this so that you are mindful of gift tax implications.

7. Charitable Giving: Do you have a charity that is close to your heart? This should be spelled out. You may have an organization or charity that you?d like to donate while you?re alive. You?ll want to spell these wishes out in your estate plan.

8. Charitable Inclinations at Death: You may have an organization or charity that you would like to receive a portion of your assets. This can be structured in a number of ways. A charitable remainder trust (CRT), as an example, is often a successful strategy of increasing the legacy you leave behind to both the charity and your loved ones, and also helps mitigate estate taxes.

Once you?ve identified what issues you have, prioritize them. You?ll want to put a comprehensive financial plan together, which includes your estate plan so that you are on track with your goals. Revisit the plan once a year and when a major life event takes place. If you don?t have an estate plan, get referrals from some trusted friends and interview a few estate planning attorneys. Choose someone you feel comfortable with who has a practice that is in line with your needs. If you need a wealth advisor, I would again suggest you get referrals to several people. Interview them until you find someone you trust has your best interests at heart and who can offer you in-depth analysis of your life and help you execute a strategy. Your estate planning attorney and wealth advisor will often be able to refer you to CPAs, business attorneys, insurance brokers, and private bankers to help address other issues on the list. You?ll want to make sure your advisors collaborate with one another so that nothing is missed, and if you can find a financial advisor who is comfortable quarterbacking all your trusted advisers, that is the best case scenario.

As soon as your financial house is in order, you will find that you are in a better, more secure place to withstand life changing events. While you might need to make revisions to some of your decisions along the way, you will have peace of mind knowing that at least this part of your life is taken care of and you?re prepared for life?s unexpected events.

LONDON (AP) ? A judge is due to rule on a multibillion-dollar legal battle waged between two Russian tycoons in a London courtroom.

Judge Elizabeth Gloster is expected to deliver a summary ruling Friday to settle the feud between 45-year-old Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner, and the 66-year-old self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

Berezovsky, a former Kremlin power broker, alleges that Abramovich, who he called his protege, betrayed and intimidated him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil company Sibneft vastly beneath their value.

Berezovsky alleged blackmail and breach of contract, and is seeking more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages. Abramovich denies the allegations.

Gloster has reserved judgment since the trial, the most high-profile commercial case at London's High Court in recent years, ended in January.

Landlords Tactics You need To Know About When Leasing Office ...

A good actuel rep broker should be able to give clients a good guesstimate with respect to the functional square footage of the space he?s shown a tenant.

Most tenants feel that leasing NYC office space resembles renting an apartment.
Obviously it isn?t and setting up a small mistake as a result of lack of experience and knowledge may cost a company a fortune in the term of a hire. These two examples are simply a couple among several potential mistakes any tenant can make without appropriate guidance.
Contrary to popular belief there are multiple varieties of electricity charges throughout commercial real estate leases.
Sounds ridiculous but it?s true. The most widely used varieties are called rent add-on, submetered, and direct.
Submetered electrical is basically the property owners way of metering a tenants electric and getting them a portion profit on top of your exact usage. Market prices on this surcharge are anywhere from 8% to as high as 15%.
A great way to comprehend these pitfalls along with the many others not talked about here is toseek advice from a tenant portrayal commercial real estate broker. These are generally brokers whose single job is to signify tenants in purchases and instruct all of them on avoiding common costly errors when negotiating commercial real estate transactions.

Driving Pet Peeves National Survey

Majority of Ontario drivers speed over the limit and they are most annoyed by drivers who text/talk and tailgate, according to National survey.

InsuranceHotline.com surveyed Canadians on their top driving ?pet peeve? as well as their own bad habits behind the wheel.

TORONTO, August 28, 2012 ? With Canadians returning from vacation and children going back to school, roads will again become busier giving further rise to driving annoyances and unsafe practices. A survey conducted by Vision Critical Media for InsuranceHotline.com showed some interesting findings around these behaviours pointing to clear differences between gender, region, age, education level and socio-economic status.

?While we see many notable differences between the sorts of driving behaviors that bother other drivers, there are a few universal pet peeves regardless of driver profile, such as texting while driving,? said Tammy Ezer, Director of InsuranceHotline.com. ?What?s encouraging is that almost 90 per cent of drivers in Canada say they have not practiced this very dangerous behaviour within the past three months.?

According to the survey results, other dangerous driving practices such as speeding or entering an intersection on a yellow/red traffic light, are commonplace amongst Ontario drivers ? but these bad habits don?t seem to annoy drivers, as they?re not one of the top pet peeves. The top pet peeves were texting while driving and tailgating.

Other interesting observations include:

  • On average, according to self-reported data, Ontarians speed more than Canadians (64% versus 56%), and they are the least offended by other speeders;
  • Texting while driving is the #1 pet peeve in Ontario with almost 50% of respondents indicating that this is among their greatest annoyances while driving. Interestingly, 16% of Ontarians admitted to texting while driving;
  • Educated and higher income drivers are more annoyed with slow drivers over drivers who use their phones;
  • Young drivers (age 18-34) and males were more likely to have more bad driving habits ? they?re almost twice as likely to talk on their phone or text while driving and are least offended by other drivers doing these activities;
  • Women and young drivers are doing more self-grooming while driving;
  • 25% of women claim they have not done any of these bad driving behaviours in the past three months, as opposed to 14% of men who claim to be innocent of all dozen bad habits in the survey.

?Our survey shows that speeding is the most commonly admitted activity. Interestingly, though not at all surprising and supportive of car insurance rates for the most part, is that Ontarians, men, younger drivers and those with higher income are the most likely to speed,? commented Tammy Ezer.

About the survey

From July 30 to 31, 2012, Vision Critical Media conducted an online survey among 1,377 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error?which measures sampling variability?is +/- 2.5%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.

Notting Hill Carnival reaches bombastic climax

Revellers filled the streets of west London as the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's biggest street festival, reached its climax on Monday with its famous Caribbean-inspired parade.

A multi-ethnic throng milled between the stalls and thumping sound systems, drinking, dancing, and tasting jerk chicken as the smells of open-cooked food wafted through the air.

Cloudy weather did not deter hordes of party-goers from flooding the streets to cheer on dozens of floats and flamboyantly dressed dancers parading through the west London neighbourhood.

An extra 2,000 police officers were brought in to keep order in Notting Hill on Monday, adding to the 5,000 on patrol for Sunday's Children's Day.

Officers have been granted stop and search powers within the area where the carnival takes place, while the force has advised visitors to only use mobile phones when absolutely necessary.

Commander Christine Jones said: "Mobile phones, especially expensive ones, are a glittering prize for thieves.

"Don't give them a head start by displaying them openly and only use them if it's absolutely necessary. Pick up one of our maps instead and pre-arrange meeting points with family and friends."

Police later confirmed a group of 34 people were detained at Kings Cross underground station in order to prevent a potential breach of the peace at the event.

"The group were stopped at the station at around 3:45 pm (1445 GMT) after it was suspected they were heading to the carnival to commit disorder," said a police statement.

On Sunday, young performers covered in feathers, jewels and waving flags, danced their way along the sunny route to the sound of steel drums and calypso music.

The carnival was founded in 1964 following disturbances in Notting Hill six years earlier that saw clashes between whites and newly arrived immigrants from the West Indies.

This year's festivities have largely been peaceful so far, police said, though one 20-year-old man was left in a serious but stable condition on Sunday after being stabbed in the back and buttocks in Ladbroke Grove.

Scotland Yard arrested 96 people during Children's Day, mainly for drug and public order offences as well as robbery and assault.

Emergency Communications Center goes up in Ohlendorf West Park

Construction workers at the new Emergency Communications Center were busy putting exterior walls in place on Aug. 14. (West Newsmagazine photo)

With construction well under way, the new Emergency Communications Center, located in Ohlendorf West Park in West County, is expected to be operational early in 2014.

Florissant Police Chief William Karabas, chairman of the St. Louis County Emergency Communications Commission, said the 35,000-square-foot, $16.2 million structure will incorporate the latest technology to facilitate rapid communications between police, fire, public health and other emergency agencies throughout a seven-county bi-state area in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency. Key government offices and facilities such as Lambert-St. Louis International Airport also will be part of the system.

Counties with agencies included in the new communications set-up are St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin in Missouri and Madison, St. Clair and Monroe in Illinois, Karabas said.

Ohlendorf West Park is located on the east side of Hanna Road, south of Big Bend. The general contractor for the project is Orf Construction in Bridgeton.

Karabas said initial work at the site began about three months ago. By mid-August, exterior walls were being erected.

The facility is being built to withstand an F-3 tornado, which includes winds up to 206 miles per hour. According to national weather statistics, some 99 percent of all tornadoes in the United States from 1950-94 were of F-3 intensity or lower.

Funding for the new center comes from a one-tenth of 1 percent sales tax hike voters approved in 2009.

The Federal Communications Commission originally declared the project had to be completed by the end of this year, but the commission sought and received a deadline extension.

Karabas said a new 911 system to be incorporated in the center will enable emergency personnel to pinpoint the location of callers using cellphones to report an emergency. The new capability will deal with situations in which a caller unfamiliar with the area is unable to provide an address or other specific location information where emergency help is needed.

A request for proposals for the new system is being prepared and will go out as soon as officials believe specifications incorporate the latest technology available, the commission chairman said.

Use of land at Ohlendorf West Park meant the purchase of another site wasn?t necessary. In light of that saving, Karabas noted the commission has given $350,000 to the St. Louis County Parks Department for improvements elsewhere on the park property. Upgrades include new playground equipment and a walking trail.

In St. Louis County, the new emergency system also includes a nearly complete network of some 200 warning sirens. Karabas said testing of the sirens has resulted in adding about 14 new sirens and changing locations of a few others to achieve the desired coverage.

Myth and fact: What you need to know about credit scores

Myth and fact: What you need to know about credit scores(ARA) ? For all of the discussion around the importance of credit scores, it?s hard to know what?s true, what?s fiction, and what lies in between.

While there are misperceptions and misunderstandings still lingering in the marketplace, the good news is that overall knowledge about credit scoring is improving. A recent survey by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) and VantageScore Solutions, one of the two primary companies that generate credit scores, shows that consumers know they have more than one credit score, have a better understanding about the factors that affect credit scores, and have increased familiarity with how different kinds of companies and entities use credit scores. Consumers also have a good handle on some recent additions to federal laws regarding when lenders are required to inform borrowers about their credit scores.

?Increases in consumer knowledge probably reflect, in part, the increased public attention given to credit scores because of the new protections,? says Stephen Brobeck, executive director, CFA. ?The improvements may also be related to increased efforts of financial educators, including our own educational website, creditscorequiz.org, to inform consumers about credit reports and scores.?

However, despite the positive developments, there?s room for improvement according to the CFA-VantageScore Solutions survey.

Myth: Low credit scores don?t greatly affect how much you pay over the life of the loan.

Fact: Low scores can be costly. Only 29 percent of survey respondents were aware that on a $20,000, 60-month auto loan, a borrower with a low credit score is likely to pay at least $5,000 more than a borrower with a high credit score.

Myth: Age and marital status are factors used in calculating credit scores.

Fact: Over 50 percent of survey respondents incorrectly believed their age and marital status were factors used to calculate their credit scores. The only factors credit score models use are related to your use of credit, especially whether you make payments on time.

Myth: Multiple inquiries when applying for a consumer or mortgage loan will have a negative effect on your score.

Fact: If multiple inquiries occur during a one-to two-week window, generally they will not lower your credit scores. Only 9 percent of respondents were aware of this, and 34 percent incorrectly believed that each inquiry will lower your score.

Understanding credit scoring can be complex, but it?s in your best interest to get the facts straight. With a clear view of what?s true and false, it?s easier to set the course for a sound financial future. For more information about the myths and facts of credit, visit www.creditscorequiz.org, www.vantagescore.com and www.consumerfed.org. Empire State Building Shooting: Caught on Tape

Warning: the following video is graphic and disturbing in nature.

A surveillance camera at the scene of yesterday morning's Empire State Building shooting has capture the moment in which multiple police officers approach alleged murder Jeffrey Johnson and gun him down on the sidewalk.

You can see if for yourself here:

According to witnesses, Johnson's approached Steven Ercolino - the account executive at the company that fired Johnson last year - without saying a word.

He proceeded to pump numerous bullets into him, even standing over Ercolino's body and continuing to shoot after it was clear the victim was dead.

"Steven was a wonderful son. He was very good son and person," Frank Ercolino of Warwick, N.Y., told ABC News.

After taking Ercolino's life, Johnson walked away and was followed by a construction worked who warned two NYPD officers. They confronted Johnson, who pulled out his gun, held it up - and was shot dead by the two officers, both of whom were standing approximately eight feet away.

That's the footage recorded on the video above.

Pinnacle Finalists: Microsoft, Toyota Financial, Cliffs Natural Resources

Microsoft, Toyota Financial Services and Cliffs Natural Resources are finalists for the Association for Financial Professionals 2012 Pinnacle Award. Sponsored by Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC), the Pinnacle Awards have recognized excellence in treasury and finance each year since 1997.

Finalists were selected based on their dynamic solutions that helped their treasury and finance operations run more efficiently and effectively. The AFP Pinnacle Grand Prize winner will be named Oct. 14 at the AFP Annual Conference?in Miami.

Wells Fargo will make a $10,000 donation to a charity of the winner's choice. Danny Peltz, executive vice president and head of Wells Fargo Treasury Management, and Jim Kaitz, AFP President & CEO, will host the award ceremony.

"AFP is pleased to honor the 2012 Pinnacle Award winners," said Kaitz. "The theme of this year's Annual Conference is Bold Visions for the Future, and the solutions presented by Microsoft, Toyota Financial Services and Cliffs Natural Resources certainly meet that high standard."

Microsoft

Microsoft was selected as a finalist for its approach to enhancing zero balance account arrangements. By working with its bank to add additional information to better identify transactions, Microsoft streamlined collection sweeps for hundreds of its bank accounts and created a just-in-time funding model for subsidiary disbursements. As a result, Microsoft's treasury team reduced its balances in Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain by more than 94 percent in the past year.

Toyota Financial Services

Meanwhile, the Toyota Financial Services treasury team led a cross-organizational effort to establish robust transfer pricing that was consistent across product lines. Instead of using a benchmark rate as an approximate cost of funds, each loan was match-funded based on its characteristics and expected monthly cash flows. The impact helped treasury, finance, analytics, sales, and marketing make more-informed decisions and more-accurate funds transfer pricing for 4 million consumer retail and lease loans outstanding and over 2,000 dealer lending loans outstanding.

Cliffs Natural Resources

Based in Cleveland, Cliffs Natural Resources was selected as a 2012 AFP Pinnacle Award finalist in recognition of how its treasury team managed transformational growth in two ways. First, while increasing staff from four to 14 in less than 18 months as the company grew globally, Cliffs implemented a global risk management policy to manage its increasing foreign currency exposures across many newly acquired business units. Second, Cliff's treasury team emphasized managing talent, developing bank relationships, and leveraging real-time data and technology throughout the process with its treasury groups in Australia and America.

Scholarships are in decline as tuition soars

College students have it tough these days with ever-increasing tuition bills and record levels of debt. But in recent years, there's been one bright spot for student finances: a deep pot of scholarship money.

There's trouble on the horizon, however. New data shows that the percentage of those winning cash scholarships, typically awarded on the basis of merit, is falling dramatically. The change could have wide-ranging consequences for students, their parents and the schools alike.

The percentage of students reporting winning scholarships dropped markedly, to 35 percent in the 2011-2012 school year, from 45 percent the year before, according to How America Pays for College 2012, a recent survey of college students and their families by student lender Sallie Mae.

Scholarship recipients are still getting almost exactly the same amount as the previous year, an average of $7,673. But the availability of money is being hurt as cash-strapped states cut funding for scholarships to public schools and the schools themselves aren't always able to make up the difference.

    1. Police: At least 10 shot, 2 dead in NYC shooting

Police say at least 10 people were shot and 2 people, including the shooter, are dead after an incident outside the Empire...

    2. Love is in the air: Couple hover in jetpack wedding
    3. 'Honey,' 'rancid,' 'awesome' ... What words drive you insane?
    4. Duggars start new season, going for baby 20
    5. British tabloid to publish nude Prince Harry pics on Friday

If the trend persists, it could result in a ripple effect that alters the financial decision-making of countless American families: where students enroll, how much they're willing to pay, and who comes up with the money.

A scholarship squeeze could affect students of all stripes, but particularly those at public institutions, because of sheer numbers. Some 15.5 million students are expected to attend two- and four-year public institutions this year, according to the Center for Education Statistics. That's about 72 percent of all the U.S. students seeking higher education.

"Schools were stepping up their scholarships to help" cover rising educational costs, says Sarah Ducich, senior vice president for public policy at Sallie Mae the largest U.S. student lender. "We wondered whether that was sustainable. This year we found out that it's not."

$8 million to zero
Some states, like Georgia and Florida, have altered scholarship rules regarding who qualifies and how much money they get. Others have taken even more drastic steps.

Michigan's Merit and Promise scholarship program doled out more than $8 million to more than 6,500 students at the University of Michigan for the 2007-2008 school year, according to Pam Fowler, executive director of the college's Office of Financial Aid. By 2010-2011, that had fallen to zero.

Cash-poor states aren't providing more scholarship money despite record high enrollments, says Haley Chitty, spokesperson for the Washington, D.C.-based National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

"That means fewer funds are being spread out among more and more students," Chitty says.

According to Illinois State University's Grapevine project, which tabulates every state's financial support for higher education, such funding fell an average of 7.6 percent in 2011-2012.

For example, Georgia's HOPE scholarships at Atlanta's Kennesaw State University plunged to $26.1 million last school year, from $38.4 million the year before, as new rules raised eligibility requirements and covered less of the total bills, reports Ron Day, the school's director of financial aid.

"Schools have been pumping in their personal funds to keep kids in school, but those funds are getting depleted, and the revenue's just not there from the state," he says.

Student worries
Dixie Miller, a student in computer graphics design at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida, is among those worried about potential cutbacks to scholarships and grants. In the past, Miller benefited from scholarship money from the state of Florida and Pell grants from the federal government.

But Florida's state support of education continues to fall, down 17.5 percent in the last five years, and Miller worries that her own scholarship could be among the casualties (she finds out in September).

"Every time we turn around there seems to be more red tape and cuts," says Miller, a single mom of a teenager.

If there is indeed a shallower pool of grant and scholarship money going forward, families will continue to respond in a couple of key ways, Sallie Mae's Ducich notes.

First, students will likely foot more of the bills since parents are getting financially tapped out. And second, debt loads may increase.

In 2010-2011, for instance, students chipped in 26 percent of total educational costs, according to the How America Pays for College study. Last school year, they had to contribute 30 percent.

Some of that added cash is coming out of their savings and income, Sallie Mae found, but most is attributed to increased borrowing - not a heartening sign for future debt loads.

Ray of hope?
It is possible the situation is less grim than it currently appears. This school year's financial aid numbers are still a work in progress. The College Board is scheduled to release its annual Trends in Student Aid report this fall, which will give a more complete picture of whether national scholarship totals are indeed being trimmed back.

"The Sallie Mae findings are interesting, but need to be taken with a grain of salt," says Sandy Baum, a co-author of the College Board report and a senior fellow at George Washington University's Graduate School of Education. "It's a survey that relies on responses, whereas Trends in Student Aid deals with hard data. It's not clear that in tough times aid goes down."

But certainly the steep scholarship drop that students are reporting is worrisome. For students like Dixie Miller, it's the waiting game that's driving her crazy.

"We know there will likely be cuts, but we don't yet know to what degree," says Miller, who aims to finish her bachelor's degree at the University of South Florida. "I really have no earthly idea how to budget for this year."

It?s not that internet marketing strategies that vary from business to industry that make a difference, but just how you apply them to market your business.

The most important element of online marketing is to go where your customers are. Just as you wouldn?t promote gambling on a gardening site, don?t promote products and services, your very own or someone else?s, or MLM where it?s not welcome.

Exactly what I?m saying is, do not simply toss your item up anywhere. That?s not targeted traffic. To obtain targeted traffic, you have to promote where others are seeking exactly what you are offering. Targeted traffic is the key to higher website conversion and even more sales.

No matter just what you are promoting, these techniques will certainly help you get more traffic to your internet site, and structure internet site is crucial to your success no matter what market you are in. Here are seven methods I make use of to get more traffic to my internet sites:

1. Search engines.

Using search engines is the best way to be discovered online, because practically everybody uses it. I do not advise that you count entirely on search engines as a way for possible clients to locate you; you must get your site be indexed. People can?t find you if you aren?t there.

2. Link exchanges.

Although linking isn?t as valuable as it once was, it?s still an efficient method to promote your internet site. By speaking to website owners, who have web sites that complement your very own, and exchanging links with them, you?ll construct referral traffic because linking is still considered to be an endorsement of your internet site.

3. Affiliate programs.

An affiliate program is where you permit others to promote your web site for a portion of the revenues of each sale. Although there are additional means to pay affiliates like per lead, pay per sale is the most typical.

With an affiliate program, you provide others an incentive for promoting your web site, and this can easily additionally make it much simpler to obtain links back to your internet site.

4. Composing posts.

Of all the online marketing techniques I have actually tried, I have actually located this one to be the most successful. I?m sure it has something to with the fact that I like to compose, and perhaps it?s much easier for me.

What articles will do for you is support you build backlinks to your internet site, establish you as a specialist, and supply more value to your business. You are supplying your potential clients something up front. If the thought of writing posts makes you quiver, attempt creating technique sheets, lists, or a ways to. Individuals adore these kinds of articles because they?re so effortless to review.

5. Joint ventures.

Done appropriately, a joint endeavor can be your ticket to rapid cash in your company. By looking for others who have corresponding internet sites, and providing them incentives to sell your products, you can quickly increase your bottom line.

6. Listing building.

Although listing building isn?t really an internet marketing technique per se, it is an important part of building your company. List structure permits you to reuse your traffic, build relationships, and increase your conversion to make more sales.

7. Know your market.

By knowing your market, you?ll understand exactly what kind of products and services potential customers are searching for. Although it won?t help you raise visibility for your internet site, it will certainly help you increase your conversions, and you can easily more conveniently get to know your market by seeing forums on your topic, uploading polls on your site, and studying other sites on your subject.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to show your possible customers respect. Do not spam them with offers. Develop a relationship, and you?ll develop traffic and make even more sales.

Tropical Storm Isaac Threatens Republican National Convention ...

Hurricane Isaac, currently a tropical storm brewing southeast of Puerto Rico, is on track to hit Florida the same day that Mitt Romney and 50,000 Republican delegates, journalists, protestors and guests descend on Tampa for the Republican National Convention.

While it is too early to accurately predict the storm's path, ABC meteorologist Max Golembo said it will hit southern Florida. Whether it will skim the east coast near Miami or crash head-on into Tampa, is still up in the air.

"Any way you take it, it's going to be a wind and rain event in Tampa," Golembo said. "We don't know if it's going to be damaging to Tampa, cancelling the convention or just delaying it."

As of this morning, the worst possible scenario is that Hurricane Isaac stays on the western track, skating over the Caribbean Sea south of Haiti, crossing the primarily flat landscape of western Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico then curving east and hitting Tampa dead-on.

"Tampa is just as vulnerable as New Orleans was in the sense that the water will funnel into the bay area and from the storm surge which will flood completely the whole entire city of Tampa," Golembo said referring to Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans in 2005.

"It would be a disaster in the Tampa area," Golembo said.

But Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn downplayed any serious threat to the convention.

Health News Report: Prostate Cancer: Six Things Men Should Know ...

When it comes to prostate cancer, there's a lot of confusion about how to prevent it, find it early and the best way -- or even whether -- to treat it. Below are six common prostate cancer myths along with research-based information from scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to help men separate fact from fiction.

Myth 1 -- Eating tomato-based products such as ketchup and red pasta sauce prevents prostate cancer. "The vast majority of studies show no association," said Alan Kristal, Dr.Ph., associate director of the Hutchinson Center's Cancer Prevention Program and a national expert in prostate cancer prevention. Kristal and colleagues last year published results of the largest study to date that aimed to determine whether foods that contain lycopene -- the nutrient that puts the red in tomatoes -- actually protect against prostate cancer.

After examining blood levels of lycopene in nearly 3,500 men nationwide they found no association. "Scientists and the public should understand that early studies supporting an association of dietary lycopene with reduced prostate cancer risk have not been replicated in studies using serum biomarkers of lycopene intake," the authors reported in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. "Recommendations of professional societies to the public should be modified to reflect the likelihood that increasing lycopene intake will not affect prostate cancer risk."

Myth 2 -- High testosterone levels increase the risk of prostate cancer. "This is a lovely hypothesis based on a very simplistic understanding of testosterone metabolism and its effect on prostate cancer. It is simply wrong," Kristal said. Unlike estrogen and breast cancer, where there is a very strong relationship, testosterone levels have no association with prostate cancer risk, he said. A study published in 2008 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, which combined data from 18 large studies, found no association between blood testosterone concentration and prostate cancer risk, and more recent studies have confirmed this conclusion.

Myth 3 -- Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) decrease prostate cancer risk. "This sounds reasonable, based on an association of inflammation with prostate cancer and the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids," Kristal said. However, two large, well-designed studies -- including one led by Kristal that was published last year in the American Journal of Epidemiology -- have shown that high blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids increase the odds of developing high-risk prostate cancer.

Analyzing data from a nationwide study of nearly 3,500 men, they found that those with the highest blood percentages of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, an inflammation-lowering omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in fatty fish, have two-and-a-half times the risk of developing aggressive, high-grade prostate cancer compared to men with the lowest DHA levels. "This very sobering finding suggests that our understanding of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids is incomplete," Kristal said.

Myth 4 -- Dietary supplements can prevent prostate cancer. Several large, randomized trials that have looked at the impact of dietary supplements on the risk of various cancers, including prostate, have shown either no effect or, much more troubling, they have shown significantly increased risk. "The more we look at the effects of taking supplements, the more hazardous they appear when it comes to cancer risk," Kristal said. For example, the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), the largest prostate cancer prevention study to date, was stopped early because it found neither selenium nor vitamin E supplements alone or combined reduced the risk of prostate cancer. A SELECT follow-up study published last year in JAMA found that vitamin E actually increased the risk of prostate cancer among healthy men. The Hutchinson Center oversaw statistical analysis for the study, which involved nearly 35,000 men in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Myth 5 -- We don't know which prostate cancers detected by PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening need to be treated and which ones can be left alone. "Actually, we have a very good sense of which cancers have a very low risk of progression and which ones are highly likely to spread if left untreated," said biostatistician Ruth Etzioni, Ph.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division.

In addition to blood levels of PSA, indicators of aggressive disease include tumor volume (the number of biopsy samples that contain cancer) and Gleason score (predicting the aggressiveness of cancer by how the biopsy samples look under a microscope). Gleason scores range from 2-5 (low risk) and 6-7 (medium risk) to 8-10 (high risk).

"Men with a low PSA level, a biopsy Gleason score of 6 or lower and very few biopsy samples with cancer are generally considered to be very low risk," Etzioni said. Such newly diagnosed men increasingly are being offered active surveillance -- a watchful waiting approach -- rather than therapy for their disease, particularly if they are older or have a short life expectancy.

"The chance that these men will die of their disease if they are not treated is very low, around 3 percent," she said. Similarly, such men who opt for treatment have a mortality rate of about 2 percent. "For the majority of newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer, giving initial clinical and biopsy information, we can get a very good idea of who should be treated and who is likely to benefit from deferring treatment."

Myth 6 -- Only one in 50 men diagnosed with PSA screening benefits from treatment. "This number, which was released as a preliminary result from the European Randomized Study of Prostate Cancer Screening, is simply incorrect," Etzioni said. "It suggests a very unfavorable harm-benefit ratio for PSA screening. It implies that for every man whose life is saved by PSA screening, almost 50 are overdiagnosed and overtreated."

"Overdiagnosis" is diagnosing a disease that will never cause symptoms or death in the patient's lifetime. "Overtreatment" is treating a disease that will never progress to become symptomatic or life-threatening.

The 50-to-one ratio is based on short-term follow-up and "grossly underestimates" the lives likely to be saved by screening over the long term and overestimates the number who are overdiagnosed. "The correct ratio of men diagnosed with PSA testing who are overdiagnosed and overtreated versus men whose lives are saved by treatment long term is more likely to be 10 to one," she said.

In A Push For European Expansion, Tag Management Platform BrightTag Has Gobbled Up SiteTagger

brighttaglogoIn a push to "rapidly expand" into Europe and the UK, BrightTag, a platform that enables site owners to manage their online marketing tags/pixels more effectively and unlock the data that visitors provide, has acquired Cardiff, UK-based SiteTagger for an undisclosed sum. The move will also see SiteTagger's founders -- Stephan Briggs and Paul Newbury -- exit the company to focus full time on their new venture, the data-centric digital services agency Yard Digital, although the two companies do plan to work together as part of BrightTag's partner program.

Poll: Now that Nikon has gone Android, does Apple need to get into the camera business?

Nikon has announced a new Coolpix S800c digital pocket camera, but one with a twist -- it runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.. That means not only can you take photos, but once you've taken them, you can do pretty much anything with them you could do with smartphone photos, including processing them and sharing them to your favorite social networks.

Now the iPhone 4S already has a pretty great camera, and who knows what the iPhone 5 will be packing, so do dedicated point-and-shoots even matter anymore? And this Nikon will be running a relatively old version of Android, quite a bit behind the current Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that all our friends over at Android Central are raving about. So... should this even matter to Apple?

I don't see Apple licensing out iOS to Canon anytime soon, but I don't see them making a traditional, dedicated camera any more either. That's the past and Apple is all about the future. We asked our resident product rendering expert, John Anastasiadis, what he thought. The image above is what he came up with -- using an iPhone as the "brain" for a camera attachment. It would slide onto a next generation iPhone and add profoundly better optics to the already excellent internet connectivity and interface.

Apple's late co-founder, Steve Jobs famously said he wanted to revolutionize photography the way he had computers, phones, tablets, and music. Did he mean making a camera, or making Apple's existing digital devices better at photography than conventional cameras? Or something else entirely?

What do you think? Now that Nikon has gone Android, does Apple need to get into the camera business? Would you buy an iOS-powered camera from Apple? An iPhone camera attachment? Neither? Something else? Vote up top and let me know the details below!
