Have you ever heard the saying "meeting the right person at the wrong time?"

It's been five years since my divorce in March.? And in those five years you could say that I have learned a thing or two about relationships, albeit the hard way.? It doesn't make me any different than others who are committed to making a good choice "the second time around".? There are people who get into one relationship and go the distance for a lifetime.? Boy do I envy them (as long as they are really happy).? I think about 50% of those folks are.

I know what it feels like to be in an unhappy marriage that "looks good" from the outside.? Unfortunately I wasn't able to lie to myself with any degree of skill to make living a life unhappily, a plausible alternative for me.? My former is happily remarried.? Paul and Kristen rock.? And so does little Zach.

I know I made the right choice.

The first person to kiss me post divorce was Max.? My God did he ever rock my world.? He was about ten years older than me and Italian (purr).? He was a web designer and a creative and hooked me up with the great works of Julia Cameron author of "The Artists Way" series.? He was an accomplished guitar player, attended spoken word heats in Toronto and well, really hot.? In 2008 he was the first lover I had had since 2002.

I wanted a relationship with him.

But I met him after my separation was ending and I was moving out on my own.? I felt lost in many ways and confused about my prospects for dating.? He would call me and talk to me at length about divorce and the "phases" or how everything was a process that people typically went through.? I now realize he likened divorce to the "Five Stages of Grief" model by Kubler-Ross which I understand to be very true now.? I went through all those stages and the hardest one for me was "acceptance".

What I wanted (or was compelled to do) was jump into a new relationship.? My "boo hoo" turned to a false "woo hoo! I'm single!" and I charged into the dating world self-assured that the first one or two people I'd meet could be "the one".? My next marriage.? The one that would fit perfectly.? Perhaps he would have children already.? Perhaps he would want to try to have one?? Maybe even adopt or foster one??? Time was wasting and I wanted to be in a good new relationship.? And I wanted children in my life more than anything.

I really wanted Max.?? And he was my first broken heart in ten years.? Boy did that hurt.? But he was right.? I had no business seeking out a relationship while I was still mired in the death throes of my own divorce.? The end of my marriage.? Transition.? The change in my economic status.? Transition.? Social insecurities.? Transition.? Geographic uprooting.? Transition.

Transition.? Transition.? Transition.

There is no room to start a relationship when you are in transition.? That is not to say that people don't do it.? They do.? Because they are seeking comfort.? Not out of weakness but the baseline human need to be "in a relationship" after you have been (or are completing) your divorce is a powerful drive.? You want to 'claw back' some of that security and normalcy.? When you are a relationship person and have spent years being one half of a two-some it can be a very hard adjustment to be a one-some.? It's lonely.? It hurts.? And in many ways it's very frightening.

I clung to Max trying to convince him I was right and ready to have a relationship.? He infuriated me when he broke down the transitional bits for me.? He was wrong. Completely wrong!? I knew myself after all and I knew I was ready to fall in love again even as I was packing up my things to move from my marital home.? I was ready to be someones partner even while my former spouse and I continued to fight.? I was absolutely prepared to be someones lover when I felt sad and insecure.

He didn't know a damned thing... right?

My heart hurts this morning big time.? I am sad.? Disappointed but also proud of myself.? I had thought the reason I was jittery with my boyfriend was because of some historical collateral damages.? I was unwilling to meet his friends or introduce him to mine.? Meeting his parents was lovely but something that I only did after two and a half months of dating.? And even then (as amazing and wonderful folks they are) I had anxiety afterward.?? I refused to meet his children.? And every time he mentioned the possibility of joining them on a family vacation in the Fall I froze up.

And it hurt him.? We both chalked it up to my cold feet and shrapnel from previous relationships.? But it wasn't that.? I finally listened to my heart this week and realized that I recognized the symptoms.

Only this time... I was the "Max" you see.

You can meet the most wonderful amazing and romantic person at the wrong time.? As I confronted the truth within myself I knew what needed to come next.? Honesty.? Full out honesty and truth.? And as it came out all the anxiety left me and I knew I had figured it all out accurately.?

Letting go of someone you love is hard when every ounce of you wants to stay.? I could write the book on that with both Paul and Adam.? But holding on when the climate or timing isn't right has consequences.? Trying to nurture a relationship during huge emotional transition is a recipe for disaster.? Hearts get broken that way.

I hope we can stay friends.

Nissan recalling vehicles for possible gas leaks

DETROIT ? Nissan says it's recalling more than 79,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix possible gasoline leaks.

The automaker is recalling certain Nissan Juke small crossover SUVs, Infiniti QX large SUVs and Infiniti M sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that fuel pressure sensors on the vehicles may not be tight enough and gasoline could leak and cause a fire. Nissan says no fires have been reported.

Dealers will tighten the sensors or replace gaskets free of charge to take care of the problem.

The vehicles were made between Oct. 5, 2009 and Dec. 27, 2011.

The recall is scheduled to start on March 19.

California is the most ?unfavorable? state for Americans, with Republicans particularly adamant in their distaste for the Golden State. Democrats have a favorable impression of the state, according to the poll by Public Policy Polling.

California was one of only five states to get an unfavorable overall score, with 27 percent giving it a ?favorable? and 44 percent giving it the thumbs down. (The rest of those polled didn?t have an opinion.)

Republicans scored it 12 percent favorable and 68 percent unfavorable. Democrats scored it 46 favorable and 20 percent unfavorable.

Hawaii easily topped the list, 54 percent to 10 percent, followed by Colorado, Tennessee and South Dakota. I hope somebody will comment below on why South Dakota is such a favorable place.

Following California as the most unfavorable states were Illinois, New Jersey, Mississippi and Utah.

Apple, the world?s most valuable technology company, is fighting lawsuits brought by debt-laden Chinese electronics maker?Proview Technology?(Shenzhen), causing retailers and resellers in more than 10 Chinese cities to take iPads off their shelves, according to media reports.

Apple?s iPad enjoys a huge lead over rival tablet PCs in China with a 76 percent share.?Lenovo?and Samsung trail a distant second and third with about 7 percent and 3 percent respectively, data from research firm IDC showed.

?Apple?s loss could be Lenovo and Samsung?s gains,? said Jonathan Ng, an analyst with CIMB in Singapore.

Samsung likely has most to gain, because its Galaxy tablet competes in the same price segment as the iPad.

?Samsung will probably benefit more from Apple?s ongoing lawsuit because both of them are after the same higher-end consumers given their price points,? said Dickie Chang, an analyst from IDC in Hong Kong.

?The impact on Lenovo may be less because Lepads are lower priced and are aimed more at entry-level users.?

A basic iPad 2 typically costs 3,688 yuan ($585), roughly the same price as 7-inch?Samsung Galaxy Tab, while some models of Lenovo?s Lepad were selling at roughly half that price on online retail sites.

IDC said in the third quarter Apple sold about 1.3 million iPads in China, while Lenovo, the world?s second largest PC maker, sold around 120,000 Lepads in its home market and South Korea?s Samsung sold 58,000 Galaxy Tabs.

The Lepad and Galaxy Tab both run on Google Inc?s Android operating system.

China has 505 million Internet users now, with the number of microbloggers exceeding 300 million ? more than that of active Twitter users.

Tablet PC makers are clamoring for more market share in a country where consumers are increasingly tech-savvy and prefer to play online games, tweet and email while on the road. Apple has said it is so far only scratching the surface in China.

While demand for Apple?s iPhones and iPads is strong in China, the lawsuit with Proview Technology, the Chinese unit of Hong Kong-listed Proview International Holdings Ltd, has taken some toll in the sale of its products.

Last Friday, Proview won a ruling on Friday at the Huizhou court in Guangzhou to prohibit an electronics appliance chain from selling iPads, just days after authorities in Shijiazhuang city near Beijing banned sales of the tablet PCs.

Proview has since asked commerce departments of some 40 cities to do the same, said the company?s lawyer Roger Xie, from law firm Grandall.

In the meantime, Apple?s legion of fans in China are resorting to other means of getting hold of an iPad.

?With Apple iPads banned in some places, it?s going to create more opportunity for Lenovo and Samsung to increase their market share,? said Sun Peilin, an analyst with Analysys International in Beijing.

?All the more so since the prices of iPads smuggled into China will rise more,? Sun said.

Apple says it bought Proview?s worldwide rights to the trademark in 10 different countries several years ago, including rights to the iPad name from a Taiwan subsidiary of Proview International.

However, Proview Technology (Shenzhen) says the sale did not cover the trademark?s use in China.

In Shijiazhuang, where authorities have told resellers to take iPads off their shelves, potential buyers were being told to ask for it clandestinely.

?You have to come back between 5 and 6 p.m. If you come during the day we?ll have to tell you we don?t stock any iPads,? said one salesman, adding that authorities would confiscate any iPads on display.

Amazon.com in China and electronics retailer Suning have also stopped selling iPads, but the companies said that had nothing to do with the Apple lawsuits.

Another major online retailer, 360buy.com, has also stopped iPad sales, but it did not say why.

But buyers can still log on to Alibaba Group?s Taobao mall and Dangdang.com to get an iPad.

IDC said currently around 12 percent of iPads are sold online, while the rest of the sales come from retailers.

With some official purchase channels cut off, more people are likely to resort to iPads smuggled from neighboring Hong Kong, where prices are lower due to a weaker Hong Kong dollar and virtually zero tariffs.

?Smuggling might continue to be the main source of iPad sales in China, especially if the iPad 3 launch in China is delayed due to the lawsuits,? Sun said.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope may have found evidence for a cluster of young, blue stars encircling one of the first intermediate-mass black holes ever discovered. Astronomers believe the black hole may once have been at the core of a now-disintegrated unseen dwarf galaxy. The discovery of the black hole and the possible star cluster has important implications for understanding the evolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies.

Astronomers know how massive stars collapse to form black holes but it is not clear how supermassive black holes, which can weigh billions of times the mass of our sun, form in the cores of galaxies. One idea is that supermassive black holes may build up through the merger of smaller black holes.

Sean Farrell of the Sydney Institute for Astronomy in Australia discovered a middleweight black hole in 2009 using the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton X-ray space telescope. Known as HLX-1 (Hyper-Luminous X-ray source 1), the black hole has an estimated weight of about 20,000 solar masses. It lies towards the edge of the galaxy ESO 243-49, 290 million light-years from Earth.

Farrell then observed HLX-1 simultaneously with NASA's Swift observatory in X-ray and Hubble in near infrared, optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. The intensity and the color of the light may indicate the presence of a young, massive cluster of blue stars, perhaps 250-light-years across, encircling the black hole. Hubble can't resolve the stars individually because the suspected cluster is too far away. The brightness and color is consistent with other clusters of stars seen in other galaxies, but some of the light may be coming from the gaseous disk around the black hole.

"Before this latest discovery, we suspected that intermediate-mass black holes could exist, but now we understand where they may have come from," Farrell said. "The fact that there seems to be a very young cluster of stars indicates that the intermediate-mass black hole may have originated as the central black hole in a very-low-mass dwarf galaxy. The dwarf galaxy might then have been swallowed by the more massive galaxy, just as happens in our Milky Way."

From the signature of the X-rays, Farrell's team knew there would be some blue light emitted from the high temperature of the hot gas in the disk swirling around the black hole. They couldn't account for the red light coming from the disk. It would have to be produced by a much cooler gas, and they concluded this would most likely come from stars. The next step was to build a model that added the glow from a population of stars. These models favor the presence of a young massive cluster of stars encircling the black hole, but this interpretation is not unique, so more observations are needed. In particular, the studies led by Roberto Soria of the Australian International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, using data from Hubble and the ground-based Very Large Telescope, show variations in the brightness of the light that a star cluster couldn't cause. This indicates that irradiation of the disk itself might be the dominant source of visible light, rather than a massive star cluster.

"What we can definitely say with our Hubble data is that we require both emission from an accretion disk and emission from a stellar population to explain the colors we see," said Farrell.

Such young clusters of stars are commonly found inside galaxies like the host galaxy, but not outside the flattened starry disk, as found with HLX-1. One possible scenario is that the HLX-1 black hole was the central black hole in a dwarf galaxy. The larger host galaxy may then have captured the dwarf. In this conjecture, most of the dwarf's stars would have been stripped away through the collision between the galaxies. At the same time, new, young stars would have formed in the encounter. The interaction that compressed the gas around the black hole would then have also triggered star formation.

Farrell theorizes that the possible star cluster may be less than 200 million years old. This means that the bulk of the stars formed following the dwarf's collision with the larger galaxy. The age of the stars tells how long ago the two galaxies crashed into each other.

Farrell proposed for more observations this year. The new findings are published in the February 15 issue of the Astrophysical Journal. Soria and his colleagues have published their alternative conclusions in the January 17 online issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
