OfficeMax to Close U.S. Stores, Expand in Mexico February 24, 2012
Naperville, Ill.-based OfficeMax Inc. plans to reduce its retail store count in 2012, primarily by closing U.S. stores. Up to 35 U.S. stores will close, while one or two new stores will open. In Mexico, eight to nine store openings are planned, along with one or two store closures. The store closures and openings are part of OfficeMax?s long-term plans to reduce its U.S. square footage through downsizing and relocation of stores. In November, the company announced plans to shutter 15 to 20 stores annually for the next five years. In 2011, OfficeMax closed 22 U.S. stores, and opened five stores and closed two stores in Mexico.
